Centech, When is the proper time to wire a street rod? I have just completed my chassis work/paint and am now starting on the body work(rust). I am impressed with your new TIME SAVER system. Thanks for a very imformative web site.
Answer:
This is a good question. The best thing to do is to plan the wiring routes prior to completing the chassis and body work to allow for the passing of the wiring through the body to the lamps and engine.
We have spent a lot of time thinking of how and where the wiring is to be distributed throughout the vehicle when we designed these kits.
Essentially, there are two thoughts on routing the wires.
REAR: The first is to route the rear wires through the inside of the vehicle to the rear lamps and fuel tank. This works great on cars where the lamps mount inside the trunk area. Secondly, you route the wires inside or along the frame to your lamps mounted outside or underneath the rear of the vehicle. We can supply kits which use one harness for all the rear lamps (including the 3rd Brake) or two cables which having one on each side.
FRONT LAMPS and HORNS: The front wiring is essentially the same as the rear except the wiring is usually done inside the frame on early rod (pre-35) or fenderless vehicles while fat fendered cars usually run the wires along the frame rails . We supply single or dual front lamp harnesses with the Timesaver.
FRONT ENGINE: Engine wiring consists mainly of the ignition power, starter, alternator and gauge sender wiring. This is a separate harness in the TimeSaver which is easily routed behind the engine to hide the wiring. Another trick on engine wiring would be to construct polished tubing to hide the wires going to the engine. With a little thought, you can hide nearly all the engine wiring.
Since you will need to use rubber grommets to protect your wires, you will need to paint the openings for these grommets prior to wiring to eliminate the possibility of rust. Therefore purchase the harness kit before you paint the body and/or frame.
